Deloitte Accounting - Amed

accounting internshipHow did you find your internship?

They recruited at my school, but a family friend submitted the resume for me.  I was then flown into their NYC offices for interviews and notified by phone that I had received an internship offer.

Why this internship?

It was with a major company in the field I wanted to go into.  After researching the company online, it seemed like a good fit.

What were your general responsibilities?

As an Audit intern, I was on site at the 2 different clients throughout the summer.  Responsibilities were basically the same as a first year employee and included bank reconciliations and examining the companies financial statements

What was a typical day like?

Get in by 9, catch up on email, work until 1230.  Lunch, usually with a member of the team, either eat out or bring it back to the office depending on how busy the day is.  If the manager is there that day, they would take you out to a nicer lunch and always pay.  Get back from lunch and work until around 5ish, tie up everything you have done that day by reporting to  your senior and leave by 530 6. Every Friday there was an event for all of the interns, so you did not go to your client that day.   They were usually fun events, community service events, or learn about the company lunches with guest speakers.  Some events were a bus tour of Manhattan, chaperoning kids to the Bronx zoo, hearing partners speak at lunches.  All of these events usually ended by 4pm at the latest, some ended at like 1pm so it is nice to usually get out early on Friday's and still get paid for the day!

Did you receive any perks, benefits, or compensation?

I was paid hourly (if you want to put the amount in it was 26$ per hour) and time and a half for overtime.  Also, Deloitte had certain agreements with companies that it offered to its employees and we were able to take advantage of those.  Some perks included 20% off your monthly cell phone bill with all of the major carriers and gym membership and clothing store discounts with a variety of gyms and stores.  On rare occasions, and usually by choice to take advantage of time and a half pay for overtime, I stayed at the office late to do work.  The company has a policy that if you stay late you can take a cab home if you live in the city or a car service to another location and are reimbursed.  You are also reimbursed for your dinner.

Where did you live?

The company offers suggestions for housing, but is not directly involved.  I lived at the NYU dorms in union square.

Future plans?

Upon completing my internship I was offered a full time position with a start date that fit my educational plans

Any particular advice?

With this internship, and likely with many of them out there, you get out what you put in.  Ask questions and work hard. All the people I worked with were really nice and did not expect me to know anything so there was no such thing as a stupid question.
