Fashion: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”  For those who love the high energy, constantly morphing, always fresh and exciting way of life, the fashion industry might just be for you.  We shouldn’t forget to mention the highly competitive and challenging aspects of the marketplace either.  Fashion shares traits with the entertainment industry: need for networking, extended hours, and often selfless commitment to your goals, especially early on in your career.

Overall, fashion is a great industry if you have a love for design, an eye for the future, and an understanding of the now.  As a very exciting career with lots of potential, a great way to get a feel and a foot in the door is to complete a summer internship and take it from there! 

Art: The great question must first be asked and answered.  Art for art, or art for business?  Now that you have moved past one the core questions of your life - let’s discuss the art industry.  Don’t be fooled, as an artist, the beauty is often in the balance - and with the extreme temperament of today’s merchandising, graphic design, photography, advertising, and marketing industries, your creative and innovative touch will often be accepted, encouraged, and put to use.  Artists should have a portfolio on hand and it is highly recommended that you put your portfolio on the web.  With today’s technology it couldn’t be easier.  Go to wordpress.com, make an account.  Google “free wordpress template for photography” and pick one of the hundred thousand websites and go live!  Think Intern also recommends that you actively promote your work amongst the online community of designers.  It’s a great way to network and get feedback.

For entry-level positions in art and fashion you should focus on experience beyond pay.  Success in both industries can be both creatively and financially rewarding.
